MCS tracking (RDT) over the HyMeX domain
The Rapid Development Thunderstorm (RDT) product provides information about significant convective systems from storm scale (isolated convective cell) to meso-alpha scale (Mesoscale Convective Complex). Based on MSG SEVIRI images, RDT allows:
identification, tracking and monitoring of intense convective systems,
detection of rapidly developing convective cells.
Ligthning data from the ZEUS network over the all domain help to discriminate convective systems.
Convective systems are graphically presented as "objects", associated with their most relevant properties :
size,
movement,
minimum temperature,
cooling rate,
lightning activity,
area extension rate....
The RDT product is developed within the Eumetsat "SAF to support Nowcasting and Very Short Range Forecasting" (SAFNWC), hosted since 1997 by the Spanish Meteorological Institute, Agencia Estatal de Meteorologia (AEMet). The objective of this SAF is to develop an operational software package of 12 products (aiming at support nowcasting applications) using data from the Eumetsat MSG and EPS meteorological satellites (1). Four meteorological services are involved in this SAF: AEMet (Spanish weather service), SMHI (Swedish weather service), ZAMG (Austrian weather service) and Meteo-France (Center of Spatial Meteorology, Lannion and Forecast Department, Toulouse). The Nowcasting department of Meteo-France (DPrevi/PI), is responsible for the development and scientific maintenance of the RDT software. This sofware is applied to the MSG SEVIRI images over the HyMeX domain in real-time.
