Climate change in the Mediterranean area

The Mediterranean climate corresponds to a transition climate between mid-latitude temperate climate and sub-tropical semi-arid climate. He is strongly constrained by local influences from the Mediterranean sea and its surrounding reliefs. The variability of this climate is very high from interannual to interdecenal time scale. One origin of this variability are the connection of the Mediterranean climate with the climate of remote area as North Atlantic, Equatorial Pacific and Indian monsoon regions. Climate change projections over this region are uncertain due to the common uncertainties on emission scenarios, data inputs and models structures. Some are more specific to the Mediterranean domain like those related to the impact of desertic aerosols. However, the recent climate change intercomparison exercises confirm previous finding concerning some consensus among the different model results. A future drier climate of the Mediterranean area, particularly during summer, is part of it.
The impact of climate change on extreme events over the region remains a widely open question.
