Vertical export of the superficial biological production

Distribution of the pelagic biota and of the particulate organic matter in the first 1000 m of the Western Mediterranean basin show a strong variability that is related to the different mesoscale structures. Concentration of the organic matter formed by the biological production may be one order of magnitude higher in fronts and eddies than in the adjacent oligotrophic waters. Observations show that the spatial heterogeneity generated by the upper layer mesoscale hydrodynamics extends into deeper layers. Consequently, the superficial mesoscale dynamics may significantly contribute to the biogeochemical cycling between the upper, mesopelagic and deep layers.
