3rd HyMeX workshop 1-4 June 2009 Heraklion (Gournes), Crete-Greece
Lightning observations during HyMeX: ZEUS observationsVassiliki Kotroni (National Observatory of Athens); K. Lagouvardos
This presentation is focused on the use of ZEUS lightning detection system operated by the National Observatory of Athens, as a tool for real-time monitoring of lightning activity over the Mediterranean. ZEUS operates continuously since 2005 and its data can be used for: lightning climatology over the area, derivation of lightning-rainfall relationships, assimilation to weather forecast models, application in nowcasting tools, etc. The presentation will provide information on ZEUS location accuracy and detection efficiency (through comparison with other lightning detection systems such as the Met Office ATD system and LINET). Moreover, examples of the aforementioned applications will be presented and discussed, in relation with HYMEX WG3 scheduled activities.
