Despite intensive research efforts undertaken in the Mediterranean Sea over more than a century, an integrated view of its evolution, in the context of the climate change and anthropogenic pressure, still lacks. The MOOSE project (Mediterranean Ocean Observing System on Environment) therefore aims to set up an interactive, distributed and integrated observatory system in the NW Mediterranean Sea in order to detect and identify the long-term environmental anomalies and trends. This project will be based on relevant scientific questions and on societal needs. The MOOSE system will include a mosaic of fixed and mobile platforms, vessel cruises and satellite observation. The operational actions will start in 2010-2011 in close collaboration with others Mediterranean projects, e.g. HYMEX, MERMEX and CHARMEX for the long-term observation periods.
