Estimation of hydrological variables using remote sensing in the REMEDHUS area (Duero basin, Spain)Nilda Sanchez-Martin (Centro Hispano Luso de Investigaciones Agrarias. Universidad de Salamanca.); José Martínez-Fernández, Carlos Pérez-Gutiérrez, Guido Baroncini-Turricchia
The knowledge of key hydrological variables like evapotranspiration and soil moisture is fundamental to understand the functioning of the hydrological processes under Mediterranean conditions. From an applied point of view, the above mentioned variables are basic for a good water and agricultural resources management. From the scientific point of view the precise knowledge of these hydrological variables is very important due to their implications in multiple physical processes.
In REMEDHUS (University of Salamanca Soil Moisture Measurement Network) activities of estimation of hydrological variables by means of remote sensing are being carried out. REMEDHUS is located in the central sector of the Duero basin (Spain). This experimental layout consist of a network of soil moisture stations and climatic and hydrological stations. The network is being used as a calibration/validation site in several EO missions (METOP-ASCAT, SMOS).
Some results of a study of estimation of soil moisture and evapotranspiration in agricultural zones using remote sensing for parametrization and of a hydrological distributed model are shown. Optical imagery from Landsat 7 ETM+ has been integrated in a water balance budget (HIDROMORE) for soil moisture and evapotranspiration retrieval. NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and classifications techniques have shown some promising results after their implementation in the hydrological model. Some of these results of soil moisture and evapotranspiration estimation in agricultural zones profiting from remote sensing data are shown.
